Water-filled manhole ‘nobody’s’ responsibility
A water-leaking manhole in East Lynne is not being repaired because no one wants to take responsibility.
East Lynne residents are at their wits’ end over water that has been bubbling from a manhole in Swaan Street for over two months.
The manhole, on the corner of Swaan Street and McClaren Avenue, has had a consistent stream of clean water bubbling from it for such a long time, that the tar is covered in algae where the continuous flow has been running down the street.
Kor Deysel, who has lived in McClaren Avenue for over 30 years, said he had been reporting the problem in vain.
“We have phoned and emailed Tshwane metro countless times about this problem and the one time they actually sent a team out to repair it, they said that it was a Telkom manhole and that they could not do anything about it.”
He then tried Telkom, but the company said it could not repair a broken water pipe, since it only worked with Telkom cables and related problems.
“I am desperate to solve this problem, but metro says its not their manhole and Telkom says they cannot help with a water leak. It’s frustrating,” Deysel said.
Councillor of Ward 84 Roelof Fourie said he would investigate and talk to Tshwane metro.
“The wasting of clean water is unacceptable and someone should take responsibility for this situation.”
Telkom spokesperson Pynee Chetty said Telkom was in the data business and did not repair water leaks. If the manhole had a Neotel logo on it, Neotel should be approached.
Comment from Neotel and Tshwane metro could not be obtained immediately.
