People in the north worried about leaking pipes
Residents: "the leak is so bad, it looks like a river running down the street."
Some people in the north of Pretoria feel neglected, saying Tshwane metro is not giving sufficient attention to burst water pipes in their area.
Concerned resident Jan O’Kelly said a pipe leaking vast volumes of water in Wes Street had not been fixed.
The metro did send out contractors, but their attempt to repair the pipe failed.
He said the contractors tried to lower the pressure of the water, but the leaking was worse after they left.
“There is a water scarcity in Pretoria and the metro is not placing enough emphasis on saving water. The leak is bad, it looks like a river running down the street,” said O’Kelly.
A resident from Theresa Park, Riana Pretorius said a water pipe had been leaking for about a month in Dolfyn Street in Theresa Park. Another pipe that burst in Porcupine Street was also waiting to be repaired.
“Our water bills are getting higher and our water is getting less. The metro should realise the importance of repairing these water pipes,” said Pretorius.
Democratic Alliance ward councillor Danna Wannenburg said the infrastructure and the conservation of water pipes were crucial, not only the repair of the pipes.
Wannenburg said the importance lay in replacing old structures. “The loss of water is an expensive problem. Better budgeting and better planning by the metro was required.”
The metro did not comment immediately.
