Paul Kruger Street from the Pretoria station to Church Square is soon to become a hive of construction activity for an extension of the A Re Yeng rapid bus project.
A resolution to this effect was passed at the latest city council meeting.
Work all around Church Square to beautify the central pinnacle of the city and to make it a more pedestrian-friendly attraction is already at an advanced stage. Several rail tracks of the tram transport system of yesteryear has been uncovered.
Council approved the extension of the proposed Tshwane rapid transport (A Re Yeng) trunk routes from Nana Sita Street along Paul Kruger Street to the Pretoria station, including two stations along Paul Kruger Street.
The 2011 and 2012 mayoral committee approved the reviewed reports of the Rapid Bus Transport (RBT) project of line 1 and line 2 for the implementation of the A Re Yeng system.
The phase 1 trunk route design comprises two trunk network services and numerous feeder services supplemented by a comprehensive transport network. The two trunk network services include line 1, that is from Pretoria central business district to Soshanguve and line 2, being from Pretoria central business district to Mahube Valley.
The trunk network comprises about 69km of median dedicated trunk infrastructure and trunk stations. The A Re Yeng route also integrates with the rail network at the key railway stations, Kopanong, Wonderboom, Hatfield and Denneboom. This provides for multimodal service integration to the north as well as to the east of Pretoria central business district.
The development of a comprehensive integrated rapid public transport network (IRPTN) necessitated the integration of the A Re Yeng services on line 1A with the Pretoria station.
Since the inception of the A Re Yeng, significant rail demand has increased with the introduction of the Gautrain rail services as well as the support of Metro Rail service.
This highlighted the lack of a dedicated public transport service from Pretoria station, with commuters disconnected to their destination forcing them to walk long distances to the nearest public transport service or destination.
According to the municipality, Paul Kruger Street has proved to be underutilised as a street. The metro argues there is much more potential in terms of modal integration and social development and the public at large as well as a city will benefit if the A Re Yeng system is to be connected to the Pretoria station.
Documentation asking for the extension of the A Re Yeng argues that such an extension will create a level of convenience that is currently not available.
