Illegal dumping still plagues residents

New cases of illegal dumping have been reported in Centurion.

The problem of illegal dumping in Centurion has flared up again. The most common spot is on the side of the old Johannesburg Road, between Hendrik Verwoerd Drive and Saxby Avenue.

In the past, people have often dumped household waste, and garden refuse, but one of the most problematic issues is the dumping of building rubble.

A Centurion resident recently caught a construction bakkie dumping a large amount of building rubble next to the road. The white Kia bakkie was seen dumping the rubble next to the road in plain sight of other motorists.

Illegal dumping has increased dramatically the past year, driven in part by the lack of proper dumping sites in the city. The Kruger Avenue mini dumping site, originally only intended for garden refuse, has now become a dumping ground for household refuse as well.

According to Ernest Gottschalk, area manager for refuse removal in Zwartkop, the Kruger Avenue mini dumping site had become an overload station, where household waste got compacted.

“The Kruger Avenue site now handles some household waste as well, but due to theft, the site is in some disarray. The large containers that were supposed to be used to throw refuse in have been stolen, and they are yet to be replaced. All the rubbish is now just dumped on the ground.”
