A Valhalla street light project has seen many of the darkest and most dangerous roads in the suburb finally lit. Many dangerous roads around Valhalla have never had any streetlights installed, and this had contributed to a rise in crime.
Twenty street lights had been within the initial budget for the project. Nine of the 20 street lights have now been installed in Alaric Road as part of the initial phase. The remaining 11 are in the process of being installed on the corner of Snake Valley and Old Johannesburg Road, where the absence of streetlights has contributed to a rise in smash-and-grab incidents at the intersection.
The team installing the street lights hope to have the project completed by December 16.
“The team is working very hard to complete the project. The only thing that hampers their progress is the rain,” said ward councillor Ina Strijdom, who heads the project.
The team, all previously unemployed residents of Valhalla, will now be able to spoil their families this Christmas with the money earned from the project. According to Strijdom, more lights will be installed next year, between Snake Valley and Eeufees Road, lighting up another dangerous stretch of road.
