Water meter theft a concern

Late water meter repairs due to alleged stealing of meters from the Tshwane metro storeroom.

Thieves pinching water meters appear to have also hit the Tshwane metro’s storeroom.

Several residents claimed to have been told by Tshwane metro workers this was why it was taking so long to replace water meters stolen at houses.

“Our water meter was stolen during the night some time ago and we waited two days before it was replaced. We called the municipality many times to find out what is going on,” Leon Nel from Pretoria West said.

“When workers got here we asked them why it took them two days to come and repair the water meter. They told us there are not enough meters in the storeroom because other workers steal them.”

He said this came as a shock to him and he wondered about the truth and possibility of what the worker told him.

“I called the call centre to find out if this was true, but the agent assisting me was unable to answer me.”

Another resident in Servaas Street, Pretoria West, Karrie Joubert said it took about a week to replace his stolen water meter.

“Workers from Tshwane metro said it took them long to come out to replace the water meter because water meters are stolen from storerooms so they have to wait for new deliveries before they come out,” Joubert said.

In Pretoria West area, theft of water meters is a concern for residents and they complain about the metro taking long to replace stolen meters.

Rekord is awaiting comment from the Tshwane metro on the matter.
