Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has asked supporters to refrain from naming land after him.
EFF spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said: “The commander in chief is in full support of the members who are determined to reclaim South African land. They should reclaim the land, but they must stop naming them MalemaVille after his name.”
An empty piece of land outside Mamelodi targeted for invasion by EFF supporters has been dubbed MalemaVille.
More than 6000 residents of Mamelodi and Nellmapius, under the leadership of EFF member Eddie Mathiba, illegally occupied the open veld on 10 September.
Mathiba said at the time: “We are prepared to fight with fire. We are going to erect shacks, like it or not. We are tired of empty promises from the government.”
He said most of the people erecting shacks on the empty piece of land had for years been on a waiting list for RDP houses. “We have found an empty spot and we are going to build our houses,” he said.
Tshwane metro spokesperson, Blessing Manale said: “The land belongs to the Tshwane metro and was bought from a private sector owner. The EFF adopted a policy of land distribution without compensation.”
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the area had been quiet lately.
“Nothing had been reported in terms of road blockage or any kind of protest. The situation is calm and police are closely monitoring the area.”
