Culprits caught dumping rubble near houses in Claremont west of Pretoria have been made to reverse their illegal deed on the spot.
Residents living near an open field on the corner of Wilhelm and Plaas streets in Claremont were fed up with illegal dumping near their homes, said Hercules community policing forum (CPF) chairperson Conrad Naude.
“This is not the first time people dumped here. There are so many companies that have dumped their rubble here.”
He said tree companies, building firms and others dumped their rubble in the field.
“Last night I happened to catch the people while dumping. I suggested to the company to pick up all the rubble they had dumped or I was going to report them to the Tshwane metro police. So they opted to load the rubble back onto the truck.”
Residents said household rubble, cut trees, building rubble and even dead animals have been dumped in the open field.
“A pensioner told me that they see all the people dumping there but there is nothing he could do. We try to keep our area clean, even cut the grass. Then we get people that think the open field is a dumping site.”
Naude said this had been a problem for years. During the festive season, the dumping got worse as people took shortcuts.
