Six mini-substations in the greater Centurion area were targeted and damaged by criminals over the past week.
Mini-substations in Clubview, Die Hoewes, Laudium, Olievenhoutbosch, Valhalla and Raslouw were all stripped of its transformer parts.
Councillor Ina Strijdom, DA spokesperson for Tshwane Electricity, said it seems at this stage Centurion is the most targeted area in the Tshwane metro. There are approximately 1 800 mini-substations in the Centurion area.
“I am urging residents to be vigilant and help us take hands against these criminals,” Strijdom said. “Residents should keep their eyes and ears open for any suspicious people and movements around mini-substations and meter boxes.”
Strijdom explained that although meter boxes are not as regularly targeted as mini-substations, it remains a problem. The cost to replace a single meter box is about R15 000 and the replacement of a mini-substation amounts to about R280 000.
“Residents should contact the Tshwane metro police immediately should they notice any suspicious activity.
The Tshwane metro cable unit can be reached at 076-463-2288. This number is only to be used to report cable theft or mini-substation related issues.
Strijdom asked that the cable unit should not be contacted for any other metro police related issues.
When reporting an issue, provide the street name and the nearest crossing streets and suburb.
Suspicious people should not be approached as they might be armed.
