More than 300 families have received brand new houses in Lady Selbourne on Friday as part of the first phase of a large housing scheme in the area.
The houses were handed over to the new owners by Gauteng premier and Human Settlements MEC, Jacob Mamabolo.
Premier David Makhura said when completed, the project would consist of 5 700 houses. He added that government would continue to build houses for those who cannot afford to buy or build houses of their own.
Makhura said only people who had applied for houses would be considered for the project. “You have a government that cares. When people have houses, they also need jobs. Without jobs, they won’t be able to pay for their services,” he said.
He said provincial government would ensure that houses are completed on time. Initially, the Lady Selbourne housing project was supposed to comprise of a combination of low-income housing rentals and conventional bond houses.
The houses were supposed to be divided into three parts with 170 ‘giveway’ houses, 86 rentals and 43 bonded units.
