Frustration over water woes

Residents of Elardus Park are frustrated over poor service delivery from the Tshwane metro.

Frustrated residents of Elardus Park east of Pretoria are fed up with poor service delivery from the Tshwane metro.

Kara-noel Kraft, a resident of Buccaneer Street, said after a burst water pipe was repaired at the end of December last year, several pipes in the area were damaged by the sudden gush of water when the flow was restored.

“It has been an absolute nightmare for us, since we have been without water for most of the time from last week Saturday until Wednesday this week.”

Kraft said her frustration did not end there as Tshwane workers left a mess when they came to fix the pipes on Wednesday.

“Besides the paving that was left uprooted in a messy pile, they damaged our stormwater drain and even left the half of the tree they uprooted to fix the problem, lying on the side of the road.”

Resident Jan Swanepoel is equally frustrated. He said the pipes that were removed were most likely installed in the early 1970s, which explained why they continued to give problems.

“My driveway was so badly dug up that I could not enter my property. I had to ask the workers to fill it in such a way that I could just get to my house with my vehicle to park inside,” Swanepoel said on Friday.

“It is frustrating living like this, because we also have no water. How are we supposed to flush our toilets or wash anything? I have had to resort to buying drinking water by the litre. It is unacceptable.”

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the pipes had been repaired and would be monitored.

“The teams from water and sanitation were busy, and they managed to restore the water supply on Tuesday. However, further water leaks were found due to pressure build-up, given that the entire network in this area is ageing,” Mashigo said.

He apologised on behalf of the metro for inconvenience caused to residents.
