Full dumping sites cause havoc

Residents of the West and Moot area turned away at dumping site due to them being full.

Residents from both the west of Pretoria and Moot were up in arms after they were turned away at the Mountain View garden refuse dumping site on Monday morning due to the site being full.

According to residents, since last year October they have been having problems at the site. In December the problem escalated and people resorted to dumping their garden and other household refuse opposite the site.

A resident from the Moot who was at the site on Monday, said they are tired of the problems at the dumping site. Ronnie Masser said the situation at the dumping site is unacceptable and there is no one who is willing to act on it and that is why they turned to their ward councillor, Elma Nel, for help.

“People dump everywhere at the site. The bins are not being used. The place has not been like this in the past and now it needs to be cleaned up.”

Masser was at the dumping site with ward 58 councillor Elma Nel and Johan Griessel from the Mayville parks. They were accompanied by another resident from Booysens, Nick Kleinschmidt, who has also on several occasions been told to turn around at the site since it is full.

“Since last year October there has been this problem. I myself have experienced the problem here, with the workers preventing us from entering the site and giving attitude. Something needs to be done about this place, it cannot go on like this,” Nel said.

Griessels pointed out that not all the items being dumped at the site is garden refuse. Rekord was given a tour of the site and discovered household garbage, beds, toilets and other refuse, including garden refuse. He said the supervisor of the dumping site needs to do something about the place.

There are about seven bins at the dumping site that were not emptied. One worker at the dumping site said because of the full bins residents have started dumping all over the place at the site. He said a truck was supposed to be sent out to come and clean the place on Monday but they were told the truck is still busy in the north of Pretoria.

Residents have also started dumping on the open space opposite the dumping site near residents’ homes.

“We have been struggling with mosquitoes, flies and rats. The smell here is very bad and this place has become unhygienic for us,” a resident living opposite the dumping site, Esther Swartz, said.

She said she had to take people’s insults when she tried to prevent them from dumping opposite the dumping site. Swartz and other residents are not happy about the situation because it affects them badly.

On Monday the road leading to the gate of the dumping site was closed to prevent people from entering the site since it is full.

It was brought to Rekord’s attention there were 28 bins at the dumping site and there are about seven left now.

An enquiry has been sent to the Tshwane metro about the matter.
