Residents frustrated with closed dumpsites

Closed dumpsites in Pretoria has residents frustrated and confused.

Residents in Pretoria have been continually frustrated with the lack of open dumpsites in the city.

One of the major concerns for residents has been the Garstkloof organic landfill and builders’ rubble dumpsite. Residents have been up in arms as the management at the dumpsite have refused residents access to the site, but have allowed access to large trucks.

According to Herman Booysen, chief of garden refuse transfer sites, this is due to urgent rehabilitation of the site. “The Gartskloof site has been closed to the public for a year. This is because it needs rehabilitation. The trucks people see going in are those of the municipality. At the moment, only municipality trucks containing organic material like garden refuse, are being let in.”

Booysen said if people need to dump organic material, the best would be the Kruger Avenue dumpsite in Centurion. “If residents need to discard building rubble, the best would be the Hatherley dumpsite in Nellmapius, just off Soloman Mahlangu (M10). Another place would be the Onderstepoort dumpsite in Rosslyn on the R566.”

DA ward councillor Casper McDonald has previously said the lack of dumpsites in the city is giving rise to the number of incidents of illegal dumping. Commenting on the state of affairs at the infamous Rooihuiskraal garden refuse station, one of the open refuse stations in Pretoria McDonald said “The fact that this facility is in such an appalling condition means the entire area is becoming one big dumping ground.”

One of the other garden refuse stations still in use is the Kruger Avenue overflow station, where garden refuse can still be discarded.
