Various people have fallen victim of email scams claiming to be from the South African Revenue Service (Sars).
These emails claim that amounts of money, ranging from R1 000 to R5 000, have been deposited into the victims’ bank accounts and they should click on a link to verify their personal information, including banking details.
Sars spokesperson, Adrian Lackay, said Sars would never request such information from taxpayers on email or via SMS.
“If a taxpayer needs to make changes to his/her banking details, the taxpayer must visit a Sars branch office in person, with an ID and Fica documents.”
These emails look legitimate and have the Sars logo and logos from various South African banks on them.
“If the taxpayer is uncertain about the authenticity of any Sars communication, the taxpayer should contact the Sars call centre to verify such information.”
