New road structure for Hazeldean

A massive new road infrastructure involving a new off-ramp on the N4 is planned with the first phase being the construction of a road that should alleviate traffic congestion on Silver Lakes Drive.

Construction of a R90-million road to alleviate the heavy traffic flow on Silver Lakes Drive in the east of the city, could start early next year. The road would eventually be extended north over the N4 highway.

Well in excess of 20 000 vehicles, including trucks, currently use the congested Silver Lakes Drive daily – north and south bound.

Hendrik van Zyl, a manager at development giant Abland, who will be constructing the road, said the early phases of Hazeldean Boulevard, as it would be known, could start as early as the beginning of 2016 providing all expropriation and funding matters for the road reserve were concluded.

The road, which would intersect with Graham/Lynnwood Road, would run almost parallel with Silver Lakes Drive.

The environmental scoping report for the project, applied for by the Tshwane metro, had already been approved, Van Zyl said.

The majority of the road reserve was located on land already owned by the Hazeldean Development Consortium, (Abland and Sable Homes), with the balance of the road crossing a number of other privately-owned properties in the vicinity of Graham/Lynnwood Road.

Van Zyl said if the expected starting date of early 2016 was met, the construction of Hazeldean Boulevard would take about 12 to 18 months, depending on weather and industry conditions.

“There should be very little or no impact on Graham/Lynnwood Road as this project is taking place in a greenfields area,” Van Zyl said.

He explained that Hazeldean Boulevard was a component of a larger road infrastructure network in the Hazeldean area which included a new interchange on the N4 freeway.

“There is a future national highway namely the PWV17 planned to link the N4 freeway with the R21 in the vicinity of Irene Country Mall,” Van Zyl told Rekord.

“With Hazeldean Boulevard we will construct the first phase on the N4/PWV17 interchange and a section of the PWV17 freeway heading in a southerly direction, linking with a planned extension of Silver Lakes Drive. There are also plans to extend Hazeldean Boulevard further north over the N4 freeway linking with Solomon Mahlangu Drive,” Van Zyl said.

He stressed that the Hazeldean Consortium was working closely with Tshwane in a positive spirit to join forces in building a logical set of road infrastructure that would benefit the greater community around it as well.
