Brave security dog saves the lives of three officers

Ferro, a security dog, was honoured for saving the lives of three security officers.

A security dog was honoured in Centurion on Friday for saving the lives of three officers.

Ferro, a six-year-old Malinois Belgian Shepherd, acted decisively when an armed man was about to shoot the trio, said Bidvest Protea Coin’s chief operations Officer Waal de Waal.

He said security officer Isaac Mpheane, two colleagues and Ferro were patrolling a site in Meyerton on Wednesday evening when the dog sensed danger from a nearby bush and pricked his ears.

Mpheane sent one of the other officers to investigate. Two men jumped out from behind a high wall and one of them pointed a handgun at the officers, threatening to shoot if they moved. The man fired a warning shot.

Ferro leapt forward and grabbed the arm of the gunman. A shot went off, narrowly missing the three officers. The man dropped the gun and it was picked up by his accomplice. One of the suspects left only to return with five more.

The officers took cover from the large group, but a growling Ferro stood his ground. He sprang into action by attacking one of the men and pinning him to the ground.

The targeted man managed to free himself of Ferro’s grip, rounded up the others and they all fled. Ferro went after them, but was called back by Mpheane.

The seven men are still being sought.

A special ceremony was held for Ferro at the company’s head office in Centurion. He was given a new leash and a dog tag for outstanding service. Ferro also scored a new bed, several chew toys and a hefty new bone to feast on.

Ferro, alongside officer Mpheane, arrived at the ceremony to the tune of Who Let The Dogs Out?

He immediately grabbed his new bone, wrapped in a big blue ribbon, and began chewing. The rest of the ceremony was lost to Ferro.

De Waal said: “It is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. No doubt that there is plenty of fight in Ferro.”
