Heavy police presence at EFF statue protest

EFF members protested in Church Square.

A heavy police presence hung over the EFF’s protest at Church Square on Saturday morning.

Police had erected a near two metre high barbed wire fence around the controversial Paul Kruger statue, barring anyone from coming close to it.

A small group of roughly 50 EFF members carried out a peaceful protest.

EFF regional spokesperson Thembisile Nikelo said the protest would remain peaceful. “We aren’t here to tear down the Paul Kruger statue, nor are we here to fight the police. We as the EFF are here to support what our members want. Just as all the old apartheid artifacts are in the apartheid museum, we feel that this statue must go as well.”

The small group sang and danced on Church Square, calling for the removal of the statue, as curious onlookers stood around watching.

This comes days after right wing protesters, supported by singers Steve Hofmeyr and Sunette Bridges staged a protest at the statue, with Bridges temporarily chaining herself to it.
