Public servants march for money

Thousands of public servants marched to the public service and administration offices on Thursday to hand over a memorandum of their demands.

Chants echoed through the streets of Pretoria as thousands of public servants from several trade unions marched to the public service and administration offices on Thursday.

The workers demanded, among other things, a 10% pay rise as opposed to the state’s proposed increase of 4.5%.

Leaders from the Gauteng and Mpumalanga sectors of the unions took part in the protest.

The march began at the Putco bus depot in Marabastad, proceeded to the city centre through Johannes Ramakgoasa Street and turned to Madiba Street, stopping at the national treasury offices.

They delivered a memorandum outlining their demands to acting director general Ismail Momoniat.

He accepted the document and sought to assure the workers he would make sure both the ministries of the treasury and public service and administration would get it within an hour.

Momoniat used the opportunity to take a swipe at those behind xenophobia, saying recent attacks on fellow-Africans in Gauteng and Kwa-Zulu Natal were uncalled for.

Xenophobia is crippling our economy,” he said.
