DA councillor ready to take on new role

DA councillor Elmarie Linde is ready to take on her new role as shadow MMC for the city of Tshwane’s housing and human settlements portfolio committee.

As the newly appointed shadow MMC for the city of Tshwane’s housing and human settlements portfolio committee, Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Elmarie Linde, has taken the bull by the horns and is ready to make a difference.

“When I look at the activities of this committee, it is clear that not much is happening to alleviate the backlogs pertaining to new housing developments. One of the reasons is tenders are not finalised and a second reason is no consensus can be reached between the city and the provincial department of housing with regard to Tshwane metro’s accreditation to commence with housing projects,” Linde said.

She said there are not enough reports from the department to discuss in portfolio meetings. “This month’s meeting had one item that was withdrawn at the start of the meeting,” she said.

Linde said there are many challenges in the department, therefore she and her team of councillors will drive issues in the following months to draw attention to poor service delivery.

She said residents have a right to adequate housing and the leaders of this city have to ensure everyone enjoys this constitutional right.

“It is important that the government grants towards housing be spent wisely towards the building of new houses and it is important that the hostels in the city be managed properly. Another concern is the waiting lists for RDP housing and municipal rental properties. These lists are not readily available for inspection, neither do applicants get feedback on their positions on these lists,” she said.

She said despite all the challenges she faces in this new role, she is looking forward to meeting the demand and creating a positive committee ready to stand in the gap for its residents.
