People of Pretoria not impressed with new e-tolling deal
Pretoria residents still unhappy about e-tolls.
Most people in Pretoria approached on Saturday were not impressed with the new e-tolling dispensation announced by Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa earlier in the week.
Only the odd one came out in support of motorists having to pay tolls.
Here are some of the responses Rekord encountered:
Wayne Noble: “I think the government is trying to get every cent that we earn because we keep paying and paying. My big problem is that taxis are not paying e-tolls while they make more money than the average working class. Why are government officials also not paying? All their vehicles have e-tags.”
Shareen Derouxbaix: “The way the whole e-toll issue was handled didn’t help anyone. Forcing everyone to have e-tags will only cause more crime in the country. Increasing or decreasing tariffs won’t help because we are not benefiting. The money goes to Belgium.”
Luyanda Ntuli: “I think the government knows that they are fighting a losing battle. Hence they are now reducing the prices with benefits. I believe after six months the whole e-toll issue will be scrapped. They thought everyone was going to pay. Unfortunately, people will not fall for it.”
Nozi Jara: “People should pay the e-tolls because the government made the law. We should pay because if we don’t pay, who will? I believe R250 is not that much because some people pay it every month for gym while they don’t even go to the gym. We South Africans should stop complaining for once.”
Fikile Ndunduza: “It’s no good if e-tolls are reduced by whatever amount because we were never given a choice. e-tolls were just built without our concern. I believe they also din’t have an idea or a reason for implementing the system.”
Neil Bosman: “I think before the e-tolls were implemented the government should have at least consulted with the citizens to get their take on the whole issue. We understand that roads have to be paid because they are used frequently, especially the N1. The whole issue should have been sorted by negotiations.”
