Residents sign petition to have ‘killer dam’ fenced
Residents of Midas near Morula Sun in Mabopane have signed a petition to have the 'killer dam' in their area fenced.
Residents of Midas have signed a petition to have the “killer dam” in their area enclosed. The dam has allegedly claimed five lives.
Over 100 residents, supported by officials from the Democratic Alliance (DA), signed a petition pleading for the dam to be fenced off.
The signed petition was then handed over to DA coucillor Cheecky Ndlovu and DA member of Parliament Marius Manqoba Redelinghuys both of whom would forward it to Tshwane metro.
The petition follows a report by Rekord about the fears of residents about the number of lives that have been lost at the dam.
According to residents, no one who dares walking close to the dam ever returns to the world of the living.
Redelinghuys said it was disturbing to witness such an environment, right inside a village, with a killer dam endangering lives of residents.
“Five people have already died at the dam. We call on the local ward councillor in the area to be removed for claiming that she knew nothing about the dam,” said Redelinghuys.
He said as the opposition party they would use everything at their disposal to follow up on the matter and ensure the dam was enclosed.
Locals said the “killer dam” near Morula Sun casino began claiming lives in 2000. Most of them were residents of the tiny village of Midas, about 100m from the dam.
They have listed the following victims from area:
– On 28 March 2000 a boy known to residents as Tinyiko was swallowed by the dam.
– In 2004 it claimed another victim known as Mr Kotu’s son. Kotu left Midas after burying his son.
– Also in 2004 a police officer was found dead near the dam.
– In 2005 the dam claimed another victim, an 11-year-old boy.
