New-born baby found abandoned near prison
A new-born baby boy was found abandoned in Pretoria on Monday morning.

A new-born baby boy was found abandoned in a veld in Potgieter Street near the Kgosi Mampuru II prison on Monday.
Best Care Ambulance Services spokesperson Xander Loubser said the infant’s umbilical cord was still freshly clamped when he was found.
“The umbilical clamp was done in hospital and this probably occurred after the mom and baby were discharged from hospital,” he said.
Loubser said paramedics were alerted by the CPF in the area.
The baby boy was about 48 hours old and was taken to Steve Biko academic hospital.
In a separate incident, a woman was saddled with a stranger’s baby on Monday after being asked to look after the child briefly at Bloed Mall in the city centre.
The mother of the child told her she was quickly going to buy something for the baby, said police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.
“After about three hours, the woman who was left with the baby asked one of the security guards if they had seen the infant’s mother.”
The mother was nowhere to be found and the woman took the infant, between one and two weeks old, to the Pretoria Central police station.
“The police took the infant to the Steve Biko hospital for observation. They found nothing medically wrong with him,” she explained.
Selepe said social workers took the baby to an undisclosed place of safety.
“A case of abandonment and child neglect has been opened and investigations continue.” She urged anyone with information that might help police locate the child’s mother to contact their nearest police station or send an SMS to Crime Line on 32211.
