Manhunt for seven prison escapees
Seven prisoners are at large after they escaped from the Lenasia Magistrate's Court on Monday. Police are on the hunt.
Police have launched a manhunt for seven prisoners after they escaped the holding cells at the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the seven men were awaiting trial and appeared in court for robbery with aggravating circumstances, house break-in and theft.
He said the men fled after they allegedly overpowered police officers working at the cells and broke the main door.
“They could be anywhere. Members of the public are warned not to confront these prisoners, but to contact the nearest police station if they see them.”
The prisoners are:
• Brendon Paul, for house break-in and theft
• Johnson Leroy, for house break-in and theft
• Romeo Beukes, for robbery and aggravating circumstances
• Luvesh Veerasmy, for house break-in and theft
• Dumisani Selepe, for house break-in and theft
• Thabiso Sebelwane, for house break-in and theft
• Mpho Ramatsoale, for house break-in and theft
Dlamini said investigations were underway to determine if the escape was due to negligence.
“Anyone who may have assisted the prisoners to escape will face a criminal case, as well as disciplinary action that may result in being discharged from the service.”
