Criminals terrorise motorists in Sunnyside
Police and CID security warned motorists about theft in Robert Sobukwe Street in Sunnyside.
A string of arrests have been made for the theft of valuables from cars in Robert Sobukwe Street in Sunnyside.
The Sunnyside City Improvement District (CID) security said at least five people had been caught with such stolen goods in their possession between 17 May and 8 June.
“Theft out of motor vehicles is a real challenge in Sunnyside. It needs the law enforcement agencies to work together with the residents,” said CID security manager Templeton Ngonyama.
Those arrested were between 20 and 30 years old. All of them were apprehended between Celliers and Leyds streets in Robert Sobukwe Street.
One of them was believed to be a buyer of stolen goods.
Ngonyama said negligence by motorists sometimes made life easier for the thieves.
Common mistakes by motorists included leaving laptops, computer tablets and cellphones in sight on car seats and not double-checking that all the doors were properly locked. These items should be locked away in the boot.
The criminals posing as car guards often used signal jamming devices to prevent car doors from locking properly.
Ngonyama implored residents to work with the police to fight crime in Sunnyside.
“Don’t buy stolen property, exercise safety precautions at all times and report criminals to the police.”
