Metro busts tender fraud syndicate
The Tshwane metro busted a corruption syndicate that solicited money for fictitious tender documents.
A crime syndicate issuing fictitious tender documents to solicit money from metro service providers was busted on Wednesday.
A man in his late 30s was arrested for fraud and corruption, said Tshwane metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.
He said a whistle blower reported that he was approached by a man who claimed to work for the municipality’s supply chain management (SCM).
The man offered the whistle blower a tender contract that was recalled on condition he paid R2 500 for the required tender document.
“The whistle blower smelled a rat when R10 000 was solicited from him for the tender to be awarded to his company. He alerted the [council’s] forensic service division, which initiated a thorough investigation.”
Bokaba said a sting operation was set up on Wednesday.
Other syndicate members were believed to have fled when the arrest was made at the SCM office parking lot.
“The [council’s] investigation found that the syndicate created fictitious tender documents, which included purchase requisitions and appointment letters. Gullible service providers were fleeced of lots of money. The syndicate seemed to have access to SCM‘s data base.”
Bokaba said the council would continue its search for the accomplices of the arrested man, who was being held at the Pretoria central police station.
