Dog rescued from sewer

Lyttelton resident’s dog rescued from a deep manhole.

Eduan Naudé had the fright of his life when his dog fell in an open manhole that leads to a sewer in Lyttelton just after 17:00 on Saturday.

Naudé (60) was walking with his dog Bella, an eight- month-old Pointer, and three of his other dogs when Bella ran off.

“She started chasing a bird and ran more than a 100 metres away from me. The one moment I could still see her running and the next she suddenly disappeared,” said Naudé.

Naudé’s other dogs immediately noticed this and ran towards her.

“I started searching in the direction she had run and found her stuck at the bottom of a deep manhole. I immediately phoned my wife, who rushed to the Lyttelton fire station for help,” he told Rekord.

Naudé’s wife, with the fire truck in tow, rushed to the scene to assist.

“The firemen climbed down into the deep hole and rescued Bella. When they finally managed to get her out, the other dogs were ecstatic.”

Naudé has praised the fire brigade for their invaluable assistance.

“Without them we would have been in big trouble.”

Bella was lucky to have survived her ordeal without any injuries. “She fell into a sewer, so we’ve just had to give her two very good baths,” said Naudé laughingly.
