Brooklyn police on slipper patrol
Brooklyn police celebrate women’s month in a most spectacular (and comfortable) way.
The Brooklyn police station celebrated their commitment to women’s month in a most unusual and colourful way – with police officers hitting the streets in their slippers.
On Friday, 7 August, various police officers from the station spent the day out of their service boots, and in their favourite pair of slippers in support of both women’s month and Reach for A Dream’s Slipper Day.
The police officers used the day to campaign for various issues, including reducing the number of smash-and-grab incidents as well as ending domestic violence.
“’Boot it or Lose it’ pamphlets were distributed in Hatfield and Hillcrest where there is a high density of parked vehicles. The opportunity was used to make motorists aware of smash-and-grab incidents and to prevent theft out of motor vehicles,” said Brooklyn police spokesperson Captain Colette Weilbach.
She added: “The Brooklyn police hope that through this campaign that motorist will start to adhere to the message by putting all their loose items in the boot – only then there will be a remarkable reduction in vehicle related crimes. Therefore – ‘Boot it or Lose it’!”
Pamphlets on domestic violence were also distributed.
“It is the commitment of the South African Police Service to treat a victim of domestic violence with sensitivity and care. Brooklyn police station is proud to boast with a 100% compliance with the requirements of the Domestic Violence Act,” said Weilbach.
During the awareness campaign Brooklyn police officials committed themselves again that they will:
- Treat victims with respect and protect their dignity, listen to what victims have to say.
- Not insult or blame victims or suggest that it was their fault that they were abused.
- Assist victims with empathy and care.
- Inform victims of their rights and options.
Weilback concluded: “Assist the Gauteng SAPS to fight fraud, corruption, unethical behaviour or any other suspicious activities that could be detrimental to our success by phoning the Gauteng Standby Provincial Duty numbers: Duty General 082 313 8299, Duty Brigadier 082 444 4354.”
