Celebs to read for kids

A campaign aimed at encouraging kids to develop interest in reading will be held at Afro-Zwanakha Café in Soshanguve on August 29.

A campaign aimed at encouraging kids to develop an interest in reading will be held at Afro-Zwanakha Café in Soshanguve on August 29.

The campaign called #LongShort will mark a milestone, its 5th podcast leading up to the literacy month of September.

Project coordinator, Kgaugelo Dube said the campaign sought to ignite a passion for African Literature through a series of readings within public libraries.

“Adopting a very simple format, it plays out with a capable TV or stage performer reading a short story or novel excerpt to an audience. These recordings are then recorded and packaged into FREE podcasts for consumption at any time,” said Dube.

She said the project, launched in March 2015, had seen libraries being turned into vibrant spaces celebrating African Literature with Hlubi Mboya, Khulu Skenjana, Abena Ayivor, Mbali Kgosidintsi and Quanita Adams already having read stories by some of Africa’s most acclaimed writers.

The podcasts were shared across different online and mobile platforms including Youtube, Facebook, SoundCloud and Bozza.

“We are indeed thoroughly inspired by all the audiences who continue to come out to a reading once a month in order to learn more about Africa’s illustrious literary heritage. It is so fulfilling to see ‘repeat’ audience members popping up at the different libraries!” said Dube.

The next reading moves to a cultural space/informal library – Afro-Zwanaka Café in the heart of Soshanguve – where one of film and theatre’s brightest stars’ Lindiwe Matshikiza will read from Doreen Baingana’s (Uganda) book, Tropical Fish: Tales From Entebbe.
