Centurion taxi violence erupts

Centurion road closed on Monday afternoon after taxi violence erupted again on Lenchen Avenue.

Taxi violence erupted in Centurion on Monday afternoon, causing the closure of Lenchen Avenue.

Taxi windows were smashed and rocks hurled at passing cars near South Street.

“More than 18 taxis were by mid-afternoon parked in Lenchen Avenue with broken windows,” said Vanessa Jacobs, spokesperson for the Orange Fox security firm.

She said the situation was volatile as taxi drivers appeared to be upset about something.

“Police are on the scene and it is almost impossible to get closer.”

Eyewitness Dean Heylen said on social media rocks were being thrown at cars.

“Mini bus taxi windows were being smashed,” said Heylen.

He said innocent passengers were being chased by what seemed to be rival taxi associations.

“Stones, sticks and smashing of minibus taxi windows. It’s chaos again.”

Police on the scene could not be reached for comment immediately.

In the morning, taxi violence was reported near Southdowns shopping centre. Shots were fired and a man was taken to hospital.
