Man selling fake airtime
Police in the city centre are looking for a man who is believed to be selling fake airtime.
A man has sold fake MTN airtime vouchers worth over R2 000 in Marabastad in Pretoria.
“During a police visibility operation in Marabastad on Wednesday morning, police were tipped off about a man who sells blank R5 MTN vouchers to people,” spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said.
When police went to investigate, the man saw them and ran away.
“He was in the process of selling airtime to one of his victims when he noticed the police. He fled the scene.”
As he escaped, the man did not pack all his stuff and left behind some of the fake airtime vouchers.
People were warned to be wary when buying recharge vouchers from street vendors or anyone else.
“These people target areas where they know that commuters are in urgently need to get to their destinations.”
She said many people had fallen victim to such crimes.
“The moment the victim opens the recharge voucher they realise it is blank.”
Police urged anyone with information on the matter to let the nearest police station know.
