Blaze after man pours petrol over family members

Family members severely burned in house fire.

Five members of an Olieventhoutbosch family suffered serious burn wounds when a fire destroyed their house the weekend.

The blaze was apparently preceded by a man pouring petrol over a woman in an argument.

ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing said two children under the age of five were among them. The sixth family member, an adult, survived with moderate injuries.

Bodasing said fire and rescue services extinguished the fire on Sunday and freed the family from the house.

“They (the family) were treated and transported to hospitals close by,” said Bodasing.

Rekord has been told that a domestic argument preceded the fire. A man poured petrol over a woman and some of the fluid landed on the children.

Police spokesperson Captain Tumisang Moloto said an attempted murder docket had been opened.
