A Hammanskraal man who was found guilty of mutilating his wife’s genitals was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Monday, in the Moretele Magistrate’s Court.

Police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said Phuti Malema (34) was sentenced to 12 years for attempted murder and five for sexual assault which he will serve concurrently.

“Malema was also found unfit to carry a firearm,” he said.

In July, Malema pleaded guilty but denied the knife he used was the one presented in court.

During the sentencing, Judge Eddie Humphreys denied Malema’s claims that the knife was not the one he used.

He said the police officers who testified during the trial proved the knife was the same as the one he used to commit the crime.

Moremi said Malema attacked his wife Mapula in front of two kids in their house in Hans Kekana in Hammanskraal last year after accusing her of cheating.

The wife is currently recovering.
