Police have launched a manhunt following the escape of a prisoner from Atteridgeville on Wednesday afternoon, police said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Constable Tumisang Moloto said the man escaped from lawful custody at the Atteridgeville prison.
“It is alleged that at 11:30, prisoners were on the sports field when a 29-year-old offender escaped. He was dressed in his prison uniform and it is unclear what the circumstances were at the time of his escape,” he said.
Moloto said police as well as other law enforcement agencies assisted with the search but the prisoner had not been rearrested yet.
“The escapee was serving a four year sentence for vehicle theft.”
Moloto said a case of escaping from lawful custody was opened at Pretoria Central Police Station.
Moloto urged the public to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or send an anonymous SMS tip-off to Crime Line at 32211 if they have information that can assist the investigation or the location of the escaped prisoner.
