Three appear over attack on cyclist

Three young men charged after allegedly assaulting a cyclist at the weekend.

Three young men accused of dragging of a cyclist alongside their vehicle at the weekend have appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court.

Johannes Jacobs, Leemone Stander and Jaco Kriel made their appearance on Wednesday on charges of assault and reckless or negligent driving.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said the matter was postponed to next month for further investigation. The three were released on a warning.

Dlamini said police were investigating the possibility that the attack was racially motivated.

Simba Masvino who was injured when he was dragged alongside the three men’s car on Sunday near the Nkwe Resort in Tierpoort.

He said he believed the episode was racially motivated.

He claimed the vehicle the trio used to drag him was speeding and they would not stop when he asked them to do so.

Police said the three men allegedly knocked the 38-year-old Masdvino off his bicycle outside the Nkwe resort.

Masvino said the families of the three men had offered to pay his medical bills and took him to a private hospital for treatment.

They tried to persuade him to withdraw his complaint against the three men, but he said he refused to do so.

Masvino was admitted to hospital with a swollen face and required stitches for cuts he had suffered.
