A bomb scare at the Ga-Rankuwa Shopping Centre temporarily shut down the mall at midday on Thursday as customers were evacuated.

Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson Warrant Officer Matthew Nkoadi said one of the banks in the mall received information by phone about a bomb.

Police were called in and, after a search, declared the call a hoax.

Nkoadi said: “People were evacuated from the building, our K9 and bomb squad divisions swept the mall. Nothing was found.”

Attempts to reach the mall’s communication division were fruitless.

This was not the first time the shopping centre had been targeted.

Late last month, two people died after five robbers engaged in a gun fight with SBV protection security guards.

Two guards, one carrying cash and a rifle, were accosted by the robbers. Two robbers started shooting.

One of the robber and a guard were fatally wounded after being hit in the head.

SBV Protection offered a R500 000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the robbers.
