Hostage situation in city reported
Police and paramedics are at the scene where a possible hostage situation is underway.
Social media erupted on Friday afternoon after reports of an ongoing confrontation between the police and criminals in central Pretoria.
Social media mentioned rumours of a hostage situation developing by mid-afternoon.
A reliable source on the scene said a man was arrested while four others remained inside a building across Capitec Bank on the corner of Paul Kruger and Pretorius streets. They were apparently armed with automatic rifles.
“People are being kept hostage but as negotiations are ongoing more and more people are being released. No injuries have been reported yet,” said our source on the scene.
Police and paramedics were still on the scene by 15:00.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Poortman confirmed a robbery but could not provide more details.
