Gautrain disruption expected during anti-corruption march
Gautrain bus commuters warned of possible disruptions in its services.
The Gautrain has issued a warning on Tuesday warning commuters of a possible disruption in its services on Wednesday.
“Please note we are likely to experience a disruption to our bus services on Wednesday as drivers may be joining the national anti-corruption strike,” the warning stated.
Gautrain said its Ecomobility express bus services will not be disrupted.
Commuters are urged to make alternative transportation arrangements.
The anti-corruption march was organised by several civil society organisations with the hope to end corruption and to ensure transparent and accountable leadership.
In recent events the Centurion Gautrain station has also come into the spotlight after meter taxi drivers attacked an Uber taxi service on Friday.
A Centurion woman had a close shave outside the station on Friday night when Tshwane metered taxi drivers turned on her for getting into an Uber taxi on her way home.
In a statement on its Facebook on Friday, the Gautrain warned commuters about rivalry between Uber and metered taxi drivers parked outside the Centurion station.
“We urge commuters to be vigilant and to take extra care at all times. Police and security visibility has been increased at the station and we assure commuters their safety and security remains our number one priority.”
Responding to the online post, other commuters said they too had been attacked by a group of men on Thursday and Friday.
The Gautrain operator said it did not have any jurisdiction outside its stations.
“We have engaged with the authorities and ask that our commuters be vigilant at all times.”
Police maintained a high presence at the Centurion Gautrain station this week.
A total of 22 police officers were assigned to patrol outside the Gautrain station, said Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu.
