DA to picket over Hammanskraal water
The Democratic Alliance will be holding a picket in Hammanskraal on Wednesday over the poor state of water in the area.
A protest against the “deplorable” quality of municipal water in Hammanskraal is to be held by the DA on Wednesday.
Led by DA Tshwane mayoral candidate Solly Msimanga, the picket would be held outside the Tshwane metro offices in Hammanskraal.
“The DA has petitioned the [Tshwane metro] for clean water in Hammanskraal but the municipality has failed to act,” said Msimanga.
“The water throughout Hammanskraal is deplorable and continues to make residents sick.”
He said the event was initially planned as a march, but approval for this was refused by the Tshwane metro police department.
“It is unacceptable that Hammanskraal residents have to drink and use contaminated water that threatens their health or not have water at all,” Msimanga said.
“It is the duty of the municipality to ensure that clean water is available at all times to the people of Hammanskraal.”
Tshwane metro police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the DA had to meet certain requirements for a march to be approved.
“The DA was requested to produce all the documentation required for the March and they were unable to provide some of the documents.”
The picket will take place outside the Tshwane Region 2 Offices on Molefe Makinta Street at 09:30.
