Gunman arrested trying to infiltrate ANC Indaba

A man was arrested during ANC Indaba for impersonating a police officer and being in possession of an undocumented firearm on Saturday.

A man working for a Centurion security firm was arrested at the ANC Indaba in Midrand at the weekend for impersonating a police officer.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Mashadi Selepe said the 37-year-old, in possession of a firearm, tried to gain entry into the Indaba.

“It was when he was asked to produce accreditation and he did not have any, that police knew something was afoot,” Selepe said.

He instead produced a police appointment certificate that was later proven to be falsified, so he was arrested.

Police established that the firearm found, which the man had in his possession, belonged to a Centurion-based security firm he worked for.

Selepe said: “The man did not have a competency certificate [to handle] the firearm so police confiscated it.”

She said the police crime intelligence unit would investigate part of the case to determine why the man had tried to sneak into the ANC meeting.

Police cannot confirm or deny any motive until a proper investigation has been conducted,” said Selepe

Selepe was reluctant to name the security company the man works for.

“It is unnecessary to tarnish the name of the firm based on the personal actions of one of its employees,” Selepe said.

The man was expected to appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
