One of Winterveldt’s most wanted men has been arrested.
The 26-year-old was arrested by the police crime intelligence unit following a tip-off from an anonymous source.
Loate police spokesperson, Constable Petunia Chabangu said the tip-off was about a possible robbery of a paraffin store in Winterveldt on Saturday.
Police set a trap and followed two suspicious men they saw get out of a white BMW opposite a Putco bus depot near the Mabopane station.
“The men started running when they noticed the police,” she said.
“One of the suspects carried a bag in which there were two 9mm pistols and 29 rounds of ammunition in two magazines.”
The other man escaped.
Only when the police ran the man’s finger-prints did they realise they had arrested their most wanted suspect.
The man was wanted for two counts of murder, two attempted murder and a case of a business robbery on 15 October eight years go.
The illegal weapons found on him were a 38 revolver, and a 9mm pistol was loaded with 46 live rounds.
The murder and attempted murder cases were reported in Winterveldt between 2010 and last year.
The man was expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrates Court soon.
Chabangu said she was delighted with the breakthrough.
“The suspect had been on the run for more than eight years. I also thank the community for the valuable information given to the police that led to the arrest,” she said
