A Mabopane constable handed himself over to police on Wednesday after assaulting, raping and stabbing his wife.

The officer’s wife, who cannot be named, reported the assault to her husband’s workplace, said the Independent police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said the police officer returned home from work after a night shift on Sunday, and asked his wife to open the door.

She went to the bedroom and was followed by the officer, who sexually assaulted and stabbed her, accusing her of cheating on him while he was at work.

The officer apparently had a history of domestic abuse, and his firearm was seized by the station commander, Langa explained.

After the attack, he allegedly went to ground and only surfaced after the attack was reported in several media outlets.

Langa said the officer called his office to find out if charges had been laid by his wife. He reported for duty the next day.

“He was arrested by our investigators who came to his workplace on Tuesday morning after he went missing for two days.

“He is expected to appear in the Mabopane Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday,” Langa said.
