Shebeens were closed and hundreds of people searched when police swooped on Eersterust in the early hours of Thursday morning.

This multi-disciplinary operation Fiela focused on drug-related offences, shady liquor outlets and stop-and-search operations.

Eersterust police spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo said at least one man was caught in possession of drugs.

The 54-year-old was arrested in Margadie Avenue with two packets of CAT concealed in his pockets, estimated at a street value of R60.

“The suspect was immediately arrested and was taken to Eersterust police station. He will appear in court soon,” Shibambo said in a statement.

Two shebeens were closed down after the police raided them, aided by other government departments.

“Two shebeen owners aged 57 and 49 were each given a R1 500 fine for contravention of the Gauteng Liquor Act,” Shibambo said.

“Liquor was confiscated from the premises after the owners failed to produce liquor licenses and permits.”

More than 200 people were searched and 115 vehicles were stopped and searched at road blocks in the area.

Anyone with information on crime-related activity could call the Gauteng police on 082-313-8299 or 082-334-4354.
