Search for escaped prisoner continues
A manhunt has been launched to catch a prisoner who escaped last week.
A manhunt has been launched to catch a prisoner who escaped from the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre last Wednesday.
Department of Correctional Service spokesperson Ofentse Morwane said the department, with other law enforcement agencies, were working around the clock to ensure the escapee was re-arrested.
“The offender, Onyango Kin Owino, an Ugandan, escaped from the sport fields where inmates were playing soccer.
“The preliminary investigation shows the offender bent the palisade to create a gap through which he escaped,” he said.
Morwane said Owino was serving a sentence of four years for car theft.
“The department is committed to ensure the country’s 243 correctional centres are secure,” he said.
Morwane said in the last financial year (April last year to March this year), the percentage of escapes from correctional centres stood at 0.024%.
