A young woman accused of selling her baby will appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.
The 20-year-old woman posted an advert on the online classifieds service Gumtree on Sunday, saying her 19-month-old son was for sale for R5 000.
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi said the woman posted the advert early on Sunday but Gumtree came across it and deleted the item.
“She posted the same advert for the second time later that day and someone came across it. That is how we came to know about this matter,” Mulaudzi said.
He said the Hawks staged a sting operation with one of their detectives posing as a potential buyer.
“Our detective met with the woman and a cash transaction of R5 000 took place and the baby was given to him.”
The woman was arrested on the spot and charged with human trafficking.
The infant had since been taken to a place of safety and would be under the care of a social worker.
Mulaudzi said the Hawks would be opposing bail.
