Church burglar arrested

A man was arrested after he was found in possession of goods he apparently stole from a church.

An alleged church burglar was arrested by the Hercules police on Saturday, police said on Monday.

The 27-year-old man was arrested by Hercules sector police in the Daspoort area at the weekend.

“It was round about 19:42 [on Saturday] when the Hercules police on sector patrol saw a suspicious looking man walking along a street in Daspoort.

“The man was in possession of a microwave oven and fan heater, both worth R600,” said Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango.

He said the police stopped the man and questioned him about where he got the items from, but he failed to give account thereof.

“After further enquiries it was established that the Methodist Church in Daspoort had been broken into. The gate was derailed and the storeroom door was damaged in order to gain entry,” explained Msimango.

He said the church officials were alerted of the burglary and a case was opened at the Hercules police station.

Msimango said the man will appear in the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon.
