VIDEO: Oscar’s family also surprised

Oscar Pistorius is back at his uncle's home in Waterkloof, but his sentence continues.

Oscar Pistorius is back home and under correctional supervision.

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius’ family was also caught unawares by his release on parole a few hours earlier than scheduled.

“Like you, we had expected him to be released today,” family spokesperson Anneliese Burgess told reporters outside the Waterkloof home of Oscar’s uncle Arnold on Tuesday morning.

“We were informed that the details of any release are being decided on by the facility concerned, and this led to Oscar being released a few hours earlier.”

Pistorius, who has been sentenced to a jail term of five years for culpable homicide, was scheduled to be released on parole from Kgosi Mampuru II prison in Pretoria on Tuesday morning. However, prison authorities decided to let him go at 22:00 on Monday night.

Burgess said: “It is very important for the family that it be emphasised that Oscar’s sentence has not been shortened or reduced. He now enters the next phase of his sentence. He will serve this under the strict conditions that govern correctional supervision.”

She said the family would continue to support Oscar during the remainder of the sentence handed down to him and that he will adhere to the conditions set by the parole board.

“The family is happy Oscar is home, but they want to make the point that Oscar’s sentence continues,” said Burgess.

Pistorius was sentenced in October last year. He was convicted by the High Court in Pretoria of killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp when he shot her through a locked toilet door in his Pretoria home in February 2013.
