Security tight at Union Buildings

Students are waiting for President Jacob Zuma to address them outside the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

Police maintained a high visibility as thousands of students marching against rising university fees arrived at the Union Buildings on Friday.

The students demanded President Jacob Zuma’s presence to respond to their demands that increases in tuition fees be capped.

The students were mostly calm while awaiting a response. Earlier they burned down portable toilets and pelted riot police with stones and bricks.

Acting national police commissioner Khomotso Phahlane was seen arriving at the Union Buildings to be part of the discussions between Zuma and university leaders inside.

Zuma was scheduled to meet the management of universities that  have been under siege since countrywide students protests against rising tertiary tuition fees erupted about a week ago.
