Soccer club gets new gear
Soccer players vow to win more trophies after receiving new soccer jerseys.
Mamelodi soccer players vowed to win trophies and tournaments this coming season after they received new soccer jerseys on Wednesday.
The donation was made by local businessmen Frank Jardim and Nick Teixara who owns a butchery called Mams Roots.
The club did not only receive the new sets of jerseys but also changed the club’s name to Mams Roots Football Club.
The club has many divisions and its aim is to remove children from the streets and keep them busy constructively.
“The donation of the new soccer jersey is to help the community and not only the club,” Jardim.
“The club has helped keep children off the streets. This is how we show the club we appreciate what they are doing in helping to prevent children from doing crime.”
This was not the first time that the butchery helped the club. It has been supporting the club for the past three years with food and transport money to their match games.
“We are not only business people but feel for the community. We will always help the club when it needs us,” said Jardim.
Club owner Sunnyboy Mokwena said the club was formed in 2002 and had changed names since then.
“It was first called Glen Fare City football club and then changed its named to Jarita All Stars. Now it has changed its name to Mams Roots. The club has six divisions — u.11, u.13, u.15, u.17, u.19 and seniors.
Players train four times a week at Rethabile sports ground from 16:30 to 18:30.
Mokwena said he formed the club because he saw many young people doing nothing after school. They spend time making mischief and hanging out with the wrong people.
“I keep them busy with soccer after school,” said Mokwena.
“I am happy with the generous donations and thank the Mams Roots Butchery for the gear. Our players will look good in their new jerseys. We hope the business men can continue the good work they are doing in the community,” said Mokwena.
Captain of the senior team Thapelo Maphoso (22) thanked the sponsors, saying they would always be remembered.
“It means a lot for the players and any child interested in joining the team must visit Rethabile sports ground,” said Maphoso.
“The players will now play with more confidence and I am sure we will deliver trophies and win many tournaments.”
