Man dies in escape attempt
A man fleeing from police was shot dead and his accomplice arrested.
A man is dead and another in custody following a high speed chase which ended in a fatal shootout.
Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the police intercepted a motorist and his passenger driving at high speed in Simon Vermooten Road in Meyerspark, east of Pretoria on Friday afternoon.
The man, driving a white VW Polo made a few daredevil turns at high speed in his attempt to avoid capture by the police who were hot in pursuit.
Sepato said the man made a right turn into Bush Road followed by another into Stellanie Street.
“Soon he realised this was a cul-de-sac, and he reversed. Realising they were cornered, the men opened fire,” said Sepato.
“The police retaliated and the driver was wounded while the passenger was arrested.
“Unfortunately the 28-year-old driver was declared dead on arrival in hospital and medics.”
Sepato said a revolver, dagga, and bullets were found in the vehicle.
“We have strong reason to believe the couple are related,” said Sepato.
Sepato said he would confirm when the arrested man would appear in court.
Police are yet to confirm where the men were from when the shootout ensued.
