ATM predator finally caught
A security firm pounced on a thief after he preyed on elderly women at ATMs in Groenkloof.
A thief preying on the elderly was finally caught when he tried to rob a woman of her ATM card and money in Groenkloof.
Hi-Risk Unit spokesperson Arthur Crewe said the man was jamming the Absa ATM at Groenkloof Shopping Centre on Wednesday when he was blocked by response officers.
“We received a tip-off from a client who saw him stop in a vehicle with no number plates. As our members moved in, they caught him while robbing the elderly lady,” Crewe said.
He said the man was caught red-handed, threatening and intimidating the woman.
Crewe said the ATM robber operated in the Groenkloof and Brooklyn areas where he targeted older women.
The man was handed over to the Sunnyside police station.
“According to bystanders, he robbed ATM clients almost daily at the shopping centre.”
